7 Questions with Dr. Harmon:
1) What are some of your interests and hobbies outside of teaching and ministry?
Besides spending time with my family (see the next question), my biggest hobby is definitely sports. Chief among my interest in sports is Ohio State football. Saturdays during the fall are a special time in the Harmon household. I also enjoy reading and tinkering with computers.
2) Who are the members of your immediate family?
I have been married to my wife Kate for ten years. She loves to read, and is particularly interested in church history. We have two sons — Jonathan is eight and Jacob is five. Both of them love sports. Jonathan enjoys basketball and baseball, while Jacob may be the biggest Ohio State football fan in our family. I love to play sports with my boys, as well as board games. As a family we enjoy having people in our home, extending hospitality, and playing games.
3) What is one of your most memorable experiences in ministry?
God has blessed me with so many memorable ministry experiences that it is hard to select just one. During the summer of 1994 I spent eight weeks in Albania proclaiming the gospel to people who had never heard of Jesus. Seeing people come to faith in Christ who had never heard the gospel changed my life and gave me a heart for seeing the gospel advance to the ends of the earth.
4) What was the topic of your Dmin, Th.D, or Ph.D dissertation?
My dissertation was entitled “She Must and Shall Go Free: Paul’s Isaianic Gospel in Galatians.” I explored how Paul’s reading of Isaiah (esp. chs. 49–54) shaped his argument and theology in Galatians. The joy of this dissertation was the opportunity to blend several of my research interests (OT in NT, biblical theology, Pauline studies).
5) What classes do you teach? Which is your favorite to teach?
Since this will be my first year at Grace, I only know what I will be teaching this Fall, which includes Beginning Greek, Greek Exegesis, and Exegesis of Galatians. At some point I would love to teach a class on OT in the NT, Pauline Theology, and perhaps even a course on the life, ministry and theology of Jonathan Edwards. I also would enjoy doing a course on Second Temple Judaism and the vast body of literature associated with that period.
6) Outside the Bible, what are some of the most influential books in your life?
- Desiring God by John Piper
- Seeing and Savoring Jesus Christ by John Piper
- Knowing God by J.I. Packer
- Knowledge of the Holy by A.W. Tozer
- Biblical Theology by Gerhardus Vos
- Institutes of the Christian Religion by John Calvin
- “The Excellency of Christ” by Jonathan Edwards (sermon)
- “Divine and Spiritual Light” by Jonathan Edwards (sermon)
- Nine Marks of a Healthy Church by Mark Dever
7) What is your most recent area of research?
I continue to do work on the use of the OT in the NT, as well as biblical theology.
